Question
Hi. Since early in the 19H1 builds VMWare Workstation has been unstable for me, ranging from being unable to start a VM to crashing when performing drag and drop.
When the crash happens, the vmware_vmx.exe process gets completely stuck, and cannot be closed even by force-closing in Task Manager.
I have already filed two Feedback Hub reports on two different builds of Windows:
https://aka.ms/AA2poh2 (Build 18247)
https://aka.ms/AA3rjjr (Build 18309)
And there is a feedback from someone else with the same issue:
https://aka.ms/AA3ogjj (Build 18252)
Can Microsoft engineers please look into this? Last build that ran VMWare Workstation correctly for me was build 18234.
In case it matters, my CPU is a Core i7-7700k and my motherboard an ASrock Z270 Extreme4 (Intel Z270 chipset).

Hi,
Thanks for your update.
I confirmed that this is a known issue on windows Insider builds 19H1 with running VMWare Workstation. Microsoft is working with VMWare to get the issue resolved.
Because of this issue, a Windows update offer block has been put in place so that machines running VMWare Pro Workstation will not be upgraded to 19H1 until the issue is resolved.
Highly appreciate your effort and time. If you have any question or concern, please feel free to let me know.
Best regards,
Michael

Have you seen
Build 18346.1, 18348.1 and Skippy Build 18845.1001 will not install in VMware 15 Workstation
The Feedback Hub linked from that has this
Here is a fix. Add this to vmx file of your virtual machine:
cpuid.brandstring = “VMware Fix for Windows 10 Build 18346 x64”cpuid.1.ecx = “0————–0—————-”
cpuid.1.edx = “———–0———0———-”
monitor_control.enable_fullcpuid = “TRUE””I need to add that to get 18845.1001 installed on VMware, and it does no boot if I remove it. Have you added that your vmx?
Saturday, March 2, 2019 4:56 PM- That’s not my issue. I am trying to use VMWare Workstation on an Insider Preview host, now running build 18845. It’s the host side freezing up, with vmware-vmx.exe freezing up either on boot or on a drag and drop operation.Saturday, March 2, 2019 5:02 PM
- Ok. Can you give examples of what you are dragging and dropping as a few basic test that does work for me.Saturday, March 2, 2019 5:44 PM
On the current build of 20H1 I have not even successfully got a VM to POST much less get to the desktop.
I made this video to demonstrate the drag and drop freezing the virtualization software at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEYVjXD8VFs
Saturday, March 2, 2019 8:23 PMHi,
May I confirm with you that win10 build 18247, 18309, 18317 all came against a same issue as your post? If I misunderstood your current situation, please feel free to let me know.
We can also type “winver” to show its subversion.
Please check the following thread which is in a similar situation as yours to see if it works.

If you have feedback for TechNet Subscriber Support, contact tnmff@microsoft.comWednesday, March 6, 2019 8:07 AMAll three of those mentioned Windows Insider Preview builds have had problems for me. As I mentioned, VMWare Workstation has not run stable for me since after build 18234.
My current build is Skip Ahead 18845.1001 and while running this build as host none of my VMs successfully boot; VMWare gets stuck before the BIOS screen even appears.
Wednesday, March 6, 2019 9:56 AMAs a heads-up, I am able to successfully boot a VM under the latest 18850 build, but it is still freezing when I drag and drop content into a VM.
Here’s a video demonstrating the issue from a different build of Windows:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEYVjXD8VFs
Note that while the guest is an unsupported OS I tested the drag and drop to a Windows 7 32-bit guest just a couple minutes ago to reproduce the freezeup.

Friday, March 8, 2019 6:07 PM- With more testing, it appears that single-core VMs are more problematic than multi-core; I created a single core VM but couldn’t boot it up but when I changed the core count to 3 it runs.Sunday, March 10, 2019 2:53 PM
Hi,
Thanks for your detailed update.
So, you mean this issue the guest freeze up when dragging the files because of single core? If changing multi-cores, can this issue address?
Please also check if the host and the guest have enough resources to do the operation.

Michael

Monday, March 18, 2019 10:13 AMSorry for the late reply. I just tried to boot VMWare using Windows Insider Preview 18855 and the entire system went down with PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA.
I’ll try again when I get 18860 installed.
Wednesday, March 20, 2019 10:31 PMHi,
Thanks for your update.
Can it work on Windows Insider preview 18860 version?
Here’s the docs talked about this “PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA” and the resolution, please check it to see if it helps.
Highly appreciate your effort and time. If you have any question or concern, please feel free to let me know.

Michael

If you have feedback for TechNet Subscriber Support, contact tnmff@microsoft.comThursday, March 21, 2019 8:27 AMThe GSOD is occurring on build 18860 too.
I have found two triggers:
- Booting a VM with Enhanced Keyboard Driver.
- Dragging and dropping files to a VM (gone from freezing the VM to downright crashing the entire host)
I attempted to trace the first GSOD using WinDBG but only got symbol errors (are symbols available for 18860?) and it said the faulting module was nt.

Friday, March 22, 2019 10:11 AMThanks for finally confirming this as an issue. Until it is resolved, please make posts in the Windows Insider announcements so I can know if it is fixed or not, both Fast and Skip Ahead announcements.
I have marked your post as an answer.

1903/18362.53
Friday, April 12, 2019 12:48 PM- We are in the same boat my pc pc does not lockup or anything just that annoying vmware-vmx.exe process wont shutdown or terminate tried everything only way is restarting windows we need a way to force shutdown and a fix for this soon!Wednesday, April 17, 2019 12:25 PM
Anyone tried the May 2019 Preview to see if this was resolved?
Wednesday, April 17, 2019 9:14 PMDo you mean the preview in Fast/Skip ring or the one in Release Preview/Slow?
I am currently running build 18375 and while I can boot some VMs successfully, others cause the PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA STOP code.
Thursday, April 18, 2019 12:14 AMI am on the RTM 18362 the issue is only on insider builds VMs not other ones!
This probably has something to do with retpoline and sandbox.

Thursday, April 18, 2019 2:31 AM- Can you drag and drop files to and from a VM without freezes or BSODs?Thursday, April 18, 2019 11:06 PM
I’m on 18885.rs_prerelease.190419-1606
Every time I drag and drop I get the GSOD.
Sunday, April 28, 2019 7:00 PMI’m on RTM 18362.53, and my VMs still have this issue. I thought it was only an issue on Insider Builds up until now, but even installing fresh with the final ISO of 1903 has this issue for me. I wonder if it’s processor related, my laptop has an Intel Core i7-7700HQ. I have a friend with a different CPU and he has no issues.
Edit: Looks like a fix for this will be coming in the next VMware update: https://communities.vmware.com/thread/608636
